After days of preparing for this epic outing, I was determined to beat the IGFA 2lb Test Grass Carp World Record. If I could catch a Grass Carp this big, I would also be inducted into the IGFA Junior Angler Hall of Fame, but all I care about is that world record. I think it is more than a record to me though, if I get the record fine, but the feat itself is what blows my mind. Having a fight with a 30 or 40lb Grass Carp on 2lb test, how could it be done?
I had recently bought the Trout Magnet Sore Lip Series Rod, it handles great on Trout. I figured that this would be the rod that I use for this epic showdown. I paired it up with a fairly new Shimano Sedona 1000 reel, and the line...Trout Magnet 2lb SOS. I went for the best in hooks...Owner SSW size 4.
So where did I catch this fish, well I'll tell ya it's not in Maryland. The fish weighed in at 33lbs, it was 2lbs short of the 2lb test World Record. After an hour of battling, he came to hand.
Also landed some dinky Bass fly fishing and some on a spinnerbait.

It wasn't the World Record, but it's only "Part 1".
Tackle: Fished 2lb line with corn.
Summary: That'll be something when (if) the name under 2lb test Grass carp World Record reads "Devin Angleberger".
Fish Count: 7
Species: 6 L.M. Bass, 1 33lb Grass Carp
2012 Fish Count: 177

Devin,
ReplyDeleteGood Job! Hope you were able to release it, I am unsure of the rules as they change with time. Eventually you will begin to challenge them (all carp) well with a fly rod and the conventional gear experience will aid that effort. Again, nice, even epic, what with 2lb. line.

Released with no harm. A couple months back, I "invested" in a good 42" Carp triangle net, sling, and mat. They have done me well.
Deletewonderful catch even though you fell a bit shy, a bit of patience and persistence and im sure i will be reading about you in the record books!!
ReplyDeleteIt's only part 1, I am a little bit behind in posts...

ReplyDeleteGreat job on a fantastic catch--never landed a carp that big. Thanks for sharing

ReplyDeleteI have not seen any reviews on the Trout Magnet Sore Lip Series Rod. I am looking for a UL/Lite rod for cappie/bass/Trout/Pan Fish. I enjoy lite takle and fish with 5'-0 rod out of my kayak. but am looking into getting a 6-0 to 6'6" for lite line and lures. What are yoor thought in this rod. I want to stay with UL/Lite. Is this rod more to the med/lite or UL/Lite> Any kind of review will help. Thanks
